Are Prayers Answered?

With the growing materialistic diversions, many of us may wonder whether there is God, do we need him, are prayers answered?

Let us first try to understand the concept of prayer. Prayer is basically our appeal to God. We desire something which we are unable to get it on our own, we pray to Him to help us. We are in trouble and we are unable to get out of it on our own, we pray to Him to help us. We are not sure about a certain decision, judgement or event, we pray to Him to guide us.

We usually go to God only when we are unable to manage our affairs ourselves. When we pray to God, we communicate with a Super Power, plead our case and seek His help or guidance. God is always ready to help us, guide us and get us out of trouble, misery or sorrow. Sometimes, He does it quickly; sometimes He takes His own time. Sometimes, He compensates us in a different way or manner than what we expected or desired. God knows better than us. We have got to trust His judgement, His decision and His timing. 'God promises a safe landing, but not a smooth journey,' is a proverb. Very true to its essence.

God is closer to us than our spinal cord. It is obvious that we cannot communicate with Him unless he is close to us. We can't talk to Him by phone. We can't send Him mail, postal or email. We can't fax Him. We may wonder how He is close to us when we can't see Him. We can't see electricity, yet we believe it is there when we switch on the lights. We can't see radio waves, yet we believe it is there when we use the radio. We can't see how telephone works, but it does.

In the same way, there appears to be an invisible link between the God and mankind. Maybe, it is the soul that connects us with God. Soul may be a form of energy or power that keeps us going. We are dead when our soul is gone. In all probability, it is the soul that is the link between mankind and the God.

Let us remember one thing. We have got to trust God if we want our plea to be heard and accepted. When we make an application to a superior, we trust he is going to help us; otherwise, we will not make an application to him/her. So, it is the trust, confidence and credibility of the other person which encourages us to approach him/her. The same rule should apply to our pleas to God.

The concept of God as a Super Power, Almighty, Invincible, Immortal, has always been there in all Ages of mankind. Different tribes at different times in history took different phenomena as God. Some thought it was the Sun. Some thought it was the Fire. Some thought it was the King. Some mixed it with the Prophet or Messenger of God of their time. However, the onset of holy religions--religions propagated by the designated Prophets or Messengers of God at different times such as Moses, Jesus, Mohammad (peace be upon them)--the concept of God changed from a material being to a spiritual being. His basic characteristics remained almost the same i.e. Super Power, Almighty, Invincible, Immortal, Reckoner of the Day of Judgment.

The personal name of God also changed from religion to religion. In Christianity and Judaism, it is known as God. In Islam, it is called Allah. Other religions such as Budhism and Hinduism practised in some parts of the world have their own names for God. These religions did not come from God or Allah. These were conceived, practised and propagated by men of knowledge and learning of their times.

In the holy religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, God is the source of all knowledge, power and wellbeing for all mankind. He is the One who created the Universe, the Moon, Sun and the Stars, and the Earth and everything that lies on, between and around them. He is the Creator, the Almighty, the All Powerful, for all time to come.Spiritiually speaking, God is linked to every soul on earth. There is a hidden link between God and the mankind. He is believed to be closer to each and every person more than anybody else. He is there when we call Him. He is there when we pray. He is there when we need His help. He is there and everywhere.

Do we need God? What is God's role in our lives? Is He helpful to us in our material wellbeing as well as spiritual? Are we accountable to Him for our actions? What sort of accountability will it be and when? How do we please Him and get His blessings? How do we annoy Him and get His wrath? What are the phenomena of Hell and Heaven? and 'Are Prayers Answered?'
